Ancient Corinth

The arrival of Dorians in Corinth resulted in a big population rise which in turn led to a series of colonisations. Thus, Corinthians founded two important colonies in the west, Corfu and Syracuse, in the 8th century BC. According to some scientists, these colonies were the result of a big financial Bloom of Corinth during that specific era, yet no evidence of a wealthy society have been found during excavations.

The establishment of the colonies resulted in a fast growth to their economy and development in navigation which facilitated products exportation to the west. Therefore, arts flowered as well and we can see it in the early-Corinthian and Corinthian vessels, scricpts on boards of an ancient sanctuary of Corinth etc. An early bronze development occurred in Corinth during that period too while the naval and financial bloom of the town were supported by the progress in the field of artisanship or small industry.

During the early Historic Times, the Dorians that lived in Argos used to brag about their glorious past, arrogating the achievements of of Mycaenae and Tyrinth, while honouring the local heroes and archons as if being theirs. This is what the Dorian aristocrats of Corinth meant to do. However, even though Corinth was the richest town of those that were by Mycaenae, it was nothing more than a small prefecture under Agamemnon’s State.
